Hi, I'm Joe Carlough.

Hi, I'm Joe Carlough. 〰️

…and I run Displaced Snail Quality DIY Zines & Records, a small publisher and DIY record label. To date, I’ve created over 38,000 copies of 330 unique book & zines, and over 5,000 cassettes and records of 100 releases from artists Spencer Moody (Murder City Devils), Joe Jack Talcum (The Dead Milkmen), lauren.napier, and more. All digital downloads from music I release will always be free. I use three different record lathes, a ~1936 Presto 6DSP and two 1947 Rek-O-Cut Challengers, to create vinyl records one at a time in my home studio. I am one half of Consonant Collective with my partner Katie Haegele, and together we’re curating On the Record Poetry, a series of poetry chapbooks with accompanying records by different poets. We also steward the East Falls Zine Reading Room (EFZRR), a collection of over 1,600 catalogued zines. My first book, The Queer Affirmations Coloring Book, was published by Microcosm Publishing, and my second book Queer Horror: Fun and Freaky Perspectives on Macabre Media is due out in September 2025, also through Microcosm.

Here’s a rad interview I did with XPN, a feature about cassettes in the Sunday Edition of the Philly Inquirer, a quarantine check-up with Magnet Magazine, a guest appearance on the NPR show The Colin McEnroe show about the recent cassette revival, and I was included on an episode of WHYY’s Movers & Makers talking about the EFZRR. In 2019 I was hosted for a reading by DobraVaga, a zine gallery under the umbrella of the Kino Šiška Centre for Urban Culture in Ljubljana, Slovenia; In 2022 I spent a month living in Gröndalshús in Reykjavík, Iceland, as part of the UNESCO City of Literature writing residency (Katie & I were their first visiting writers duo! We returned a year later to tour with Make Like a Tree and to release the projects we’d completed at the residency); In 2023 I attended the Vienna Fanzineist Art Book & Zine Fair, and in 2024 we went back to Reykjavík for the RVK Art Book Fair. In 2025 we brought one of our record lathes to Iceland to cut records at an artist residency at hafnar.haus, then for a long weekend making discs at the Norðanpaunk DIY Punk & Metal festival.

Here’s a short film I made about the cats in my neighborhood:
